The name itself may derive from the Celtic word Tarsa, meaning "hill by the river". On the site of former Tarsatica, in the 13th century the town of Reka (present-day Rijeka) developed, with towers, shops and streets, which, with minor interruptions, belonged to the Habsburgs from 1466 until 1918. Today's Trsat stretches from the old town of Trsat (Gradina) to the former barracks (today's university campus) and up to Strmica in the north. Due to its position and proximity to all amenities, this district is considered one of the most sought-after in the city.
