Klana is a town in Primorje-Gorski Kotar County, located right on the border with the Republic of Slovenia. The area has been inhabited since prehistoric times, and in the Middle Ages Klana developed around the old Gradina castle, first mentioned in the 13th century. Throughout history it was under the administration of various authorities - from feudal lords to the Habsburg Monarchy. Due to its position on an important travel route towards the interior, the town had strategic significance. Today Klana is a peaceful border settlement that preserves visible remains of its past, especially the old hillfort as the most recognizable historical symbol.
